Toms River, NJ

I made it into Toms River last night and I am currently staying at the surf and stream campground. When I left Wilmington I made it to Claymont which is on the edge of DE. That night I stayed in a Burger King Parking lot. But before I got there I met Jami, Jami is a veteran who is struggling to make it in today’s world but she was really impressed on me because she has such a big heart and called me her America’s biggest hero. She has continued to stay in touch with me and I just ask everyone to keep her in their prayers.

That night before I got to the Burger King, my cart popped up underneath of me and caught the back of my ankle, it hurt a lot so I decided that I should put an ace bandage on it that I carry with me. I thought that I might have broken it so I sent out to many of my friends to pray for me. I also used ice on it that night as I was trained to do in Scouts. Well when I got up in the morning my ankle was better and I was able to walk on it pretty well (a lot better than I thought I would be able to). I am pretty sure there was a divine intervention there.

That day I did not make much for mileage but I was able to make it through Chester, PA. Where a gentleman offered that I could stay on his porch that night. I was very thankful especially after he fed me a meal that would contend with my mothers cooking (and anyone that has had my mothers cooking would know that is saying something). Well in the morning he took me up to the Benjamin Franklin Bridge. Once I Crossed the Benjamin Franklin Bridge I was officially in NJ. Which it took me less than 24 hours to get through PA. Although I have been in Pa I am not counting it yet because I did not go to a major city yet. Once I was in NJ I had a couple Police Officers warn me not to stick around Camden too long so I took their advice and kept trekking right through I had several people donate to me on several occasions going through the city. After I got through Camden I came into Maple Shade where I had a couple more officers offer me the advice to be careful a lot of places require permits to camp. So that night I was sure to stay in a motel and actually had to hike in the dark some. I had two people contact me that night one that I did not have time to talk to when he pulled up to give the “homeless guy” some help (so I had to just give him a card and say check it out), and another that just did not have time because he had been on his way to work. Both of them wanted to meet up with me and help me some more. One bought some booties for Priss the other just wanted to donate more.

Well that is how that morning started. From there I was a lot slower than normal, but without reason. Until I ran over a broken beer bottle and got a flat tire. Well while I was fixing my flat a gentleman pulled in and asked if I wanted a ride and I agreed and he brought me into Toms River, NJ and today I sent in another donation to FMSC of 443.43 making a total donation of 1133.92. If you are just joining the blog be sure to read the rest of the adventure which is below.

Wilmington, De

Once again I have fallen way behind on my Blog so I am going to apologize for any details or large gaps that are missing I have found that getting a computer is sometimes more difficult than I imagined but I am working on it.

So when I last left you Priss was getting fixed the surgery went well. The next day I planned on leaving her tin my tent for her recovery period she would have nothing to do with it so she tore a hole in my tent which I was able to mend. But when her week of recovery was over Priss and I were given a ride to Lexington, VA where after being dropped off we had not walked 5 miles before we were offered another ride after that ride it was getting late so we started to look for a place to stay the night and found one shortly later when a truck full of guys stopped and one of them lived nearby. He then gave me a ride into Charlottesville, VA where I stayed and was given a deal on some bike wheels so I upgraded them to some heavier duty wheels which so far they have held up quite well.

When I went to leave Charlottesville my pack strap broke so I went and found a place that sold straps where I was given a new strap except it did not fit my pack so I had to go somewhere else to get it modified to fit my pack frame. That cost me twelve dollars. But I got it fixed and was on my way again that night I camped in a yard the next day I was just a little ways down the road when a gentleman and his daughter drove up and offered me a place to stay the night. Had an opportunity to blog there but passed it up because he did not have word, so no spell-check. The next morning when we got up he offered me a ride down the road to where he worked from there I walked the rest of the day. The next morning I got up and started toward Culpeper where I was picked up by Pastor Nancy Palmer who let me camp in her front yard for a couple of nights while I waited for a package that I ended up leaving behind, because I could not wait for it any longer.

Well Nancy gave me a ride about halfway to Manassas when I got almost through the county a cop decide that I was obstructing traffic and decided to give me a hard time but thankfully the Lord gave me patience and the cop allowed me to continue the last mile to get out of the county. Where I was no more than out of when I found a place to stay for the night I literally stayed within 10 feet of the county line. The next morning after I got up and got on the road I was given a ride to the other side of Manassas where not but a mile down the road I received another ride from where I hiked into Washington, Dc. As I was hiking down the national mall I had a guy ride up to me on his bike and ask me if I wanted to work the next day I said sure and he told me to show up at 7:30.

I showed up and ended up working not just one day but 6. The last night the boss offered me to stay at his place (I had been staying in parks). When I was with him he took me by a sport shop where I was planning on buying new socks (specialty socks that range anywhere from 10-20$ a pair) well he picked them up for me four pairs of socks it was very relieving. Then after the last day of work one of the guys I was working with offered me a ride to Baltimore, MD. After being unsuccessful finding a hotel for me and my dog that was affordable he let me spend a night at his house where we could try again the next day. Well that extra day was long enough to get in touch with an old family friend that lives in Baltimore so I ended up not having to pay for a room. While I was in Baltimore I sent home another $293 ($639.92 total). When I was getting ready to leave Baltimore we decided I should wait out the hurricane that was about to hit the area I was headed to. Then I was given a ride a few miles down the road where I broke an axle on my cart. Thankfully Griz was still there and offered me a ride to get the replacement parts. From there I was able to hike into Delaware, where I found a cheap motel. Then I hiked into Wilmington today. I am hoping to make it to Connecticut by first weekend in Oct because FMSC is doing a mobile pack event there that weekend.

Covington, VA

I last Blogged in Charleston. A long time ago and a lot has happened since then so I will try to give you as much information as I can but I have a time limit on the computer I am on so I may not be able to get everything in that I would like to put in. Since arriving in Charleston, WV a lot has happened so bear with me as we speed through a lot of info. Ok I stayed at the shelter for three nights. I was only going to stay two but I lost my phone so I ended up staying an extra found my phone and one of the guys that worked at the shelter gave me a Black and Tan Coon Hound. I named her Priss because she is a jealous little Priss. But that night while I was hiking out of Charleston I met two homeless guys who walked with me for a while then they split directions. A little while later one of them caught up with me and tells me that his buddy is planning on robbing me that night and that he wanted to protect me. Well we went up and stayed under a bridge as you are leaving Charleston, through certain events I was able to tell him of Jesus’ saving sacrifice and willingness to forgive. He called me a couple of weeks ago and told me that he was attending church again I continue to pray that the Lord will guide him towards his will.

The next morning I got up and we parted ways. I hiked through the day receiving many donations of food and money. One lady told me that I was to come to her restaurant and order anything that I wanted off her menu. I continued hiking that night to a place just between two small towns where I found a good place to camp for the night. The next day I got up and moved down the road where a gentleman stopped and asked me if I needed anything I told him what I was doing and that I was pretty well off a that moment well I stayed on his mind for the rest of the day and finally he calls me up and tells me that when I get to Gauley Bridge that the Funeral Home where he worked was going to put me up for a night in their local hotel. Not only did he do that but he also took me up the road and fed me at Applebee. Then to top that off he let me stick around for a week. While there in Gauley Bridge I sent a check home for $114.67 (making the total to send 426.92 unfortunately $80 was lost in the mail so I only got to send 346.92) the gentleman then took me back to Charleston where I caught a ride home so that I could see my baby sister Graduate from high school.

What was supposed to be a weekend visit home ended up being about 8 weeks because the original ride I lined up fell through then I got a summer job which allowed me to get some new equipment such as a Dutch Oven, and an audio bible player. When summer camp ended I returned to Gauley Bridge and the next morning resumed hiking. Priss and I did not make but about 5 miles that day (as opposed to the twenty we had been doing) because of the heat and we managed to bend two wheels which were replaced relatively quickly. That night I stayed in some small town in the backyard of a gentleman who the next day after morning church service I was hiking and not but a mile down the road I had another bent wheel because I rolled my cart somehow. Well he helped me get back to his house and then ended up taking me all the way back to Charleston to find a new wheel which the donations I had received just covered. Praise God. I learned at that bike shop that I needed Double walled wheels that cost almost $75 dollars a piece (hope to get enough on down the road). After we got the right wheel on my cart the gentleman and his wife wanted to get me off of Route 39 because they were afraid I was going to get run over by a coal truck. So they took me all the way to Covington, VA where when I was trying to get back on track I made a wrong turn and about the time that I figured out I was a mile the wrong way from where I started and I turned around a lady pulled in and told me she wanted to give me a ride because she was afraid I was going to get run over by a logging truck. Well she ends up putting me up with another lady who helps her fix Ferrell cats through an organization called the Allegany Alley Cat Angels. The next day they were making a run to Roanoke with several cats. And I offered to help them out by going with the lady and just being an extra set of arms. Well I ended up being that and more the next day it was really cool being able to help with everything the way I did. Well when they found out that Priss was not yet fixed they decided they needed to help me get my dog fixed so I have been camping nearby at The Buckhorne with another gentleman who has been making sure I have been fed everyday and just let me stay there for free. So I am getting Priss fixed today and I will be back on the Road after she is healed up.

That is all I have for now will try and make sure I get the next blog up a little faster. And again if this is the first you are reading make sure you check out the rest of my story below. And thank you to everyone who has been keeping me in there prayers.

Charleston, WV

I would like to start by apologizing for taking so long to update my blog. It has been a bit crazy and I have not known what to write. Let us start by saying as some of you know that I made business cards while in Moorhead and I was given a major discount on them. When I left Moorhead I started hiking and I stayed in under a shelter that was just outside Olive Hill. That morning I got up and a guy that I met in Moore head called me and wanted to come pick me up because there was a storm coming at that time he was planning on joining me. So he took me to Grayson, that same storm ended up flooding his house so he was unable to join me. I stayed with him in Grayson while we tried to find out whether or not he was going to be able to join me.

When I left Grayson on Monday afternoon, May 10, I was hiking along and I had a few people that would stop and offer me food or some money. That night a lady pulled up in her truck and offered me dinner. I accepted and I loaded my cart into her truck. We went to her house where I played kickball with her son and two people that were staying with them due to the flood. We ate I ended sleeping on their couch and the whole family was just real nice and opened whatever they had to me.

I left there and started towards Ashland. On the way to Ashland I had about 8 people stop and bring me McDonalds the last two I declined because they don’t save well and I just could not eat them anymore. That night a gentleman stopped and asked me what I was doing and he ended up taking to the Salvation Army in Ashland that night. The next morning I got up and I walked to a PNC bank where I deposited $81.25 for FMSC making the total collected about $161.25. shortly after that I crossed into West Virginia into a little town called Kenova where I passed a barber shop and the barber wanted to know what I was doing and I told him I actually sat down and talked to him for about 30 minutes then he tells me to go down the street to a bar-b-que joint and that it was all on him whatever I wanted. So I ate there then I got back on the road. I got drenched while trying to get to the store where I was buying a decent rain suit. I also determined that WV is just like on big city because all the cities here you leave and enter one at the same time. I went from Kenova to Ceredo by going under a bridge, I completely missed the fact that I went through a city called west moorland I don’t know when I entered Huntington where I stayed at a mission for the night and when I left there I entered Barboursville. And all that was without seeing more than two miles of “country” combined.
While I was at the mission I met several homeless guys that just thought that what I was doing was cool and they kind of took me under their wings for the night made sure no one messed with me or my stuff it was pretty cool. The next morning when I left, I had the WSAZ news run me down for an interview around 2:00 it was the local NBC. That night when I decided that it was time for me to find a place to lay my head down for the night I did the usual where I started knocking on doors and asking to stay in someone’s front yard for the night and up to this point I had not been told no by anyone. Well the first place I asked the guy did not own the place so he could not give me permission to stay, the second place no one was home, the third place had kids and did not want a stranger camping in his yard, and the fourth guys said something about being Jewish and demanded that I leave his land immediately. By this time I had begun to doubt my mission and just at that time a truck pulls up in front of me and offers to put me up in a Hampton Inn. Now aint that great but that is not the end of it. Matt (the driver) and Granny (his future mother-in-law) insisted that I ate Cracker Barrel for dinner. The next day I got up and was headed down the road and when I got to Milton I stopped at the Dollar General to get some rice and plastic bags trying to dry out my phone. When I go to check out one of the cashiers tells me that she wanted to buy this stuff for me that her mom and boyfriend were the ones that had picked me up the previous night. Not only does she buy me the items I was picking up but she also decides that I need cold water and she gets me a new Go Phone too. Then her coworker decides she wants to help me too so she tells me to get anything that I could use out of the store (all I could find was a pot). Later that evening I get a text from Matt asking me where I was so I told him and the next thing I know Matt, Mia and Granny pull up beside me and tell me they are going to be in a parking lot just down the road. When I get to the parking lot we talk for about 30 minutes where I find out they live just down the road from a Boy Scout Camp. They end up putting me up in the Hampton inn again then I hung out with them the next day and spent the night at the Scout camp. Then they drove me up to Charleston where I stayed in a homeless shelter again. Today I am going to send home $151 making it a total of $312.25 to FMSC.

I would like to thank everyone for keeping me in their prayers and to remind those just joining the blog that there is more to read below this.

Moorehead, KY

I have stopped in Moorehead, KY in order to help a family. But lets get to that in a little while lets start with when I left Lexington. I left Lexington on the 13th of April and I started walking route 60 on the way to Charleston, WV. About halfway to Winchester a man pulled over and offered me a ride to Winchester. While walking through Winchester several people stopped and offered me food because they misunderstood my sign to think that I was hungry but I am thankful for it gave me a chance to talk to them about Feed My Starving Children. As I got to the east side of Winchester I was offered a ride to the west side of Mt Sterling. While I walked through Mt Sterling many people donated money to me and to feed my starving children. When I got to the east side of Mt Sterling I found that it was time to stop for the night. So I saw a house with plenty of trees around the yard I went up to knock on the door and as I went to knock on the door the door opened. And there was Courtney Copley. I told him what I was doing and I asked if I could cap in his front yard. By the time I explained myself more fully he had any questions and he offered me a shower. When I got out of the shower he gave me an Ale 8 and he had his son, Gabe, bring me McDonald's for dinner well by the end of the night I was clean, fed, and there were some of Gabe's friends that came over and we fellowshipped all night long. The next day I got up and hiked to Owingsville where I again received many donations to me and to Feed My Starving Children. I slept in a barn that night just east of Owingsville. The next day I started hiking again and made it to salt lick by lunch in saltlick I had to find the post office where I sent home $80 for FMSC as I continued walking that evening I made it to Farmers where a man hollered at me to come over I did. His name was David and he wanted to offer me some food in return for some work so I accepted by the end of the night I had agreed to stay for two weeks and help him out some so I am just outside of Moorehead for the next two weeks. If you are just joining the blog please remember to scroll down and read the rest it starts at the bottom.

Lexington

Glad to let everyone know that I made it safely to Lexington. God has just blessed me so much on my journey. I started my trip planning to eat a single meal everyday and through many blessings that has not been the case. On Thursday when I left bowling green I was walking along 31-w and a truck stops ahead of me a lady gets out and offers me a coke and five dollars. I turned down the coke because I have had a bad experience with drinking soda while hiking. Then a few miles up the road I another car stops in the far lane sticks a McDonalds bag out the window and says "I just got this at McDonalds and I wanted you to have it." I tried to argue that it was not necessary because I had only planned on eating one meal a day and I had already eaten lunch. In the end I accepted the meal and went on. A mile up the road I was going through Cave City and a man in a truck pulls up beside me and asks me if I need water. My containers happened to be almost empty so I said yes well he happened to own the flea market we were next to and he pulled in and filled me water containers and as he did I told him what I was doing and he said hold on a second I have something else for you. He then went inside and got two loaves of bread and gave them to me he asked me where I was staying and I told him I did not know. So he offered me a place to stay at his flea market. I accepted and I slept there.

The next morning I woke up and I was told to stick around for breakfast I was given an egg and bacon sandwich. So I started off again and one of the first things I do that morning is pass up my turn it takes me a little while to realize that I had done and then I had to backtrack. I got lots of sun and was very crisp by noon. So when I saw a lady sitting in the shade across the way I decided to go talk to her turns out that her name was Stephanie she was in her late 60' and she was hiking to Michigan. (We should all keep her in our prayers). While we were talking a lady stopped and gave us $20. Stephanie insisted that I take the money because she did not need it after much arguing I accepted it. So when I was done talking to Stephanie I decided I needed to hit the road again because I was already behind "my" schedule (I realize now that I need to let the only schedule be God's schedule). So a little ways up the road I see a yard sale so I stopped to see if they had a lightweight long-sleeved shirt so that I could get the sun off my arms. They did and when I went to pay them for it they said to put my money away that this was a gift. So I accepted it and continued on my hike. I came across a similar situation a few miles down the road where I saw a pair of boots at another yard sale (they were too big:( ) so I stopped and looking around I saw a hat that I liked so I picked it up and went to pay for it and again they refused to take my money. (I lost it to the wind the next day). well it was nearing dark and no one had offered me a place to stay yet so I decided to knock on a door and ask if I could camp in someone’s front yard well the first door I knock on agrees to allow me to camp in their yard. Well after I have camp set up I remember that I forgot to ask for water and instead of bothering the same person again I decide to go ask their neighbor for water well not only do they give me water but they also gave me a bag full of fruit.

The next morning I got up and had some more fruit for breakfast. Then I hit the road my phone was dying so when I came across a little general store I stopped in to see if they would let me charge it for a little while. I bought some meat while I was there which she would not allow me to pay full price for. (I ate it for lunch) after I ate lunch I was crossing the green river on my way to Greensburg when a truck stopped and asked where I was going and if I would like a ride. I told him and he gave me a lift then he gave me $5 and told me to get something to eat so I went into the IGA and I bought some groceries. And then I started on the road again not two miles up the road another vehicle pulled up and asked me if I needed anything. So I told him what I was doing and he said well I could take you to Campbellsville so we loaded up my cart in the back of his SUV and he started to take me to Campbellsville. On the way we got to talk and he asked me to have dinner with him and his family. Then he asked me to stay the night. I ended up going to church with him and then he fed me again and drove me to the truck stop at the intersection of 555 and Bluegrass Parkway. He also gave me twenty bucks and his information so that I could stay in touch with him and his family. That evening I made it to the intersection of 555 and 62 and then I again stopped and asked for a place to stay and was granted permission to camp by the first person I asked. the next morning I started and not but a mile or two down the road an elderly man stopped and asked if I wanted a ride and he took me to Versailles which is just 15 miles from Lexington. So I made it into Lexington by Monday evening. Praise be unto God.

Starting

I am leaving between 8 and 9 am in the morning. I hope to be in Lexington by Wednesday evening next week. I have everything packed looking forward to starting my journey keeping this post short because I am tired and ready for bed. My next post will be on the road.
